There’s still time: ESF donation will make child’s Christmas brighter

There are only a few more days left to make a child’s Christmas a little brighter.

The Empty Stocking Fund party is just a few days away. While the donations that have been collected so far have made a big difference, there is still a little ways to go before we hit our goal of taking care of Christmas for more than 600 needy Wayne County children.

The money raised will be used for holiday gifts for the children, which will distributed at a special party just for them this weekend. Each child also will get his or her own stocking filled with Christmas treats.

The day is always a special one for the volunteers. It only takes one big smile from a child to make all the months of hard work worthwhile.

And the response from the children really is special, too. So many of them seem certain that there really is a Santa Claus and he has made a special stop just for them. And that innocence is what all children should have during the holiday season.

There have already been some extremely generous donations and touching tributes to family members during this year’s fund drive. What a wonderful way to remember a beloved family member or friend than by making someone’s Christmas dreams come true. We are honored that so many of you are using our newspaper to make those special dedications.

And then there are the wonderful baggies filled with change that are coming from many of the local schools. The amounts are often staggering — several hundred dollars in some cases. How nice that some of our community’s youngsters are so willing to share some of their pocket money with children who otherwise might not find much under their trees this Christmas. Their support has been particularly touching since it so honestly comes from the heart.

This community’s generosity is really heart-warming.

So, to those of you who have already donated, we say thank you for your support. We will share with you what happens at the party in this weekend’s edition.

And for those who might not have had a chance to send in a contribution, The News-Argus staff and all of our charitable organization partners would love to have your support if you have a little bit more to be grateful for this holiday season.

And all the money, of course, will go to the children.

After all, that’s who Christmas should be for in the first place.
