Get on the wagon: See United Way video before making your decision
It is that time of year again when the first, early steps are beginning for the 2008-09 United Way fundraising campaign.
Although work has been going on for months, the community portion of the campaign is about to start up full swing.
And that means that many Wayne County residents will start looking at their budgets, their available cash and try to figure out if they can afford to give -- or to give as generously as they have in the past.
And others will simply dismiss the United Way offhand because of past bad experiences or because of what they have read about past scandals in other areas of the country involving the organization.
But before you make your decision, make sure you take a look at the organization's new video -- and its new theme "United Wayne. From the Heart. Here at Home." You will meet more than a dozen people who have either benefitted or contributed to the United Way -- and you will see how your dollars stay home to help your neighbors and friends.
You might be surprised at just how many organizations that help Wayne County residents receive funds from the United Way.
The campaign has a new feel -- a hometown touch that reminds us that we are all in this together. And that is the reason to think again about being a part of this community effort even if it is not one you supported in the past.
In a year when the economy has soured many budgets, we should remember that there are many families who are facing even tougher struggles. The money that is donated to the United Way is for them.
Be part of the effort to make this community a better place. It doesn't take much to make a difference, especially when a county stands united.
