Sharkey's Photography opened in downtown Goldsboro just over a year ago in the newly renovated Art Studio 102 building.

In February, the studio moved downstairs to a larger area, where owner and operater Nelda Sharkey says the business gets more exposure.

Mrs. Sharkey has a passion for photography and the studio specializes in all types: Family portraits, children's portraits, senior class photos, maternity and wedding photos and a wide variety of other special events.

The location downtown gives Sharkey a dramatic variety of backgrounds for high-quality photos. There are many areas that add fashion shots that seniors desire for their senior portraits.

"The trees along the streets are great for photographing a young child in overalls, sitting on a limb or along the curb with their feet in pools of cherry blossoms," she said, naming just a couple of possibilities.

Mrs. Sharkey said that when customers come into her studio, she wants them to feel right at home. She knows that in photographing individuals, it is important to capture the personality as well as the features. A relaxed setting is key to getting someone to loosen up, especially children. She said she encourages parents to allow children to bring their favorite toys along when posing for a session. Also, she has clothing for children and women to use during sessions.

With the holidays approaching, Sharkey's will be offering gift certificates for portraits and holiday cards. Santa also will be visiting, so customers are encouraged to reserve a session with the jolly old elf.

Sharkey's also is participating in National Family Portrait Month. The business will donate sitting fees during the month to Operation Smile, which provides facial surgery for the correction of cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.

During the Boo It Downtown Halloween celebration, Sharkey's will be giving away candy to trick-or-treaters and offering a special on photos of costumed children.

The business also offers in-house printing up to 13-by-19 inches.
