Chris Coker says he fell in love with horticulture in 1997 while he was working for a landscaping company in Wilmington.
He later entered the turfgrass management program at Wayne Community College and had planned to pursue a career as a golf course superintendent.
But a friend was getting out of the landscaping business and offered to turn over some of his clients to Coker, who immediately took him up on the offer.
"The rest is history," Coker says.
He and his wife, Shirley, operate Sonscapes Landscaping & Irrigation at 480 Parkstown Road, LaGrange.
They offer a full-service landscaping firm, providing landscape design and building, maintenance, hardscapes, waterfalls, ponds and streams, low-voltage outdoor lighting, irrigation systems, grading, drainage work, weed and fertilizer programs as well as synthetic putting greens.
"From concept to completion," Coker said.
He is a certified pesticide applicator, trained in turfgrass management and horticulture practices as well as a certified interlocking concrete paver installer. He also is a Vista outdoor lighting certified installer and a member of various professional landscape associations.
Sonscapes is fully insured and in compliance with all state regulations. It has courteous, knowledgeable employees.
Coker said he hopes to expand the business, both by reaching a broader customer base and by making even more services available. He also wants to expand the hardscape side of the business, which includes the installation of patios and retaining walls. They are becoming increasingly popular in the Triangle area, he noted.
Born and raised in eastern Wayne, Coker attributed his success to a loyal customer base. Keeping up with their wants is what drives the Cokers and their employees to provide the best landscaping and irrigation service possible.
