Scott Smith opened his UPS Store at 2822 Cashwell Drive on Feb. 6, 1995, but alternatives to the post office had been around for years.

The Mail Boxes Etc. concept was introduced in 1980 as a convenient alternative to the U.S. Postal Services offices. And through its evolution, it has continued to define and lead the business services category it created.

In 2001, UPS acquired Mail Boxes Etc., and in 2003, the two companies introduced the UPS Store brand.

Today, The UPS Store is the world's largest franchisor of retail shipping, postal and business service centers.

"By understanding our customer's needs and challenges, we help you do more while saving you time and money," Smith says.

The UPS Store offers consumers and small businesses a wide range of products and services, including packing, shipping, black and white copies, color copies, mailbox rentals, postal services, moving and shipping boxes, notary service, laminating and binding and fax sending and receiving.

The UPS Store was ranked No. 5 among all franchise opportunities and No. 1 in postal business services for the 17th consecutive year in the 2007 Franchise 500 issue of Entrepreneur Magazine. The Franchise 500 was a ranking of franchise opportunities based on factors like financial strength, growth rate and size.

Smith said the success of his store is a result of world class customer service.

"We will listen with respect, use sound judgment and respond in a timely manner to our customer's needs," he says. "We are committed to providing personalized and professional solutions while supporting our core values."

And he is still striving to create greater competitive differentiation in the marketplace to attract new customers while continuing to sell more packing jobs to existing customers. On Nov. 1, for example, Smith says the store will introduce a Pack & Ship Promise program for the holiday shipping season.
