Alston to speak at NAACP event

Melvin "Skip" Alston, president of the N.C. chapter of the NAACP, will speak at the Goldsboro-Wayne chapter's celebration Saturday, March 5.

The event, which marks the 96th anniversary of the NAACP's founding, will begin at 6 p.m. at Greenleaf Vision Community Center, 2105 N. William St.

The event's theme is "Honoring Our Past and Preparing for the Future." Honorees will include Nannie Barfield, Doris Hall, Dorothy W. Hardy and the late Geneva Hamilton.

A Durham native, Alston is a Greensboro businessman who founded S&J Management Corp., which manages real estate.

Alston hosts a weekly call-in radio show, "The Right Side with Skip Alston" on WGOS-AM. He has been a Guilford County commissioner since 1992. He is a past president of the state Association of Black Elected Officials and has served on the National Association of Black Officials' board.
