Airman killed in Sunday wreck

A 22-year-old airman from Wisconsin died Sunday as a result of injuries sustained in a one-car crash earlier in the day on U.S. 13 South, the Highway Patrol said today.

The victim was identified as Joshua Misselt, who was stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Misselt lost control of the car that he was driving, and it ran off the right side of the road at about 5 a.m. near Grantham School Road, a patrol spokesman said. The car struck a ditch and a culvert, overturned and ejected the passenger, the spokesman said.

Misselt was trapped inside and had to be cut from the wreckage, the spokesman said. He was transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was pronounced dead at 6:58 p.m.

The passenger was identified by the Highway Patrol only as Ashley Barnes. Her condition was not immediately available.

The car, a 2004 Acura, was destroyed.

A full report will be released later by the Highway Patrol.

The fatality was the eighth this year on Wayne County roads, including one in Goldsboro.
