02/26/06 — Awards given for flag essays
Awards given for flag essaysSix Wayne County Public Schools students were rewarded for writing essays about the United States flag. On Tuesday, the Benev-olent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 139 handed out $450 worth of U.S. Savings Bonds to students for essays on the topic "What I Feel When I Look Up at the American Flag." The fifth- and sixth-grade winners were Shelby Mueh-lenthaler, a fifth-grader at Tommy's Road Elementary, first-place winner of a $100 savings bond; David Joyner, a Grantham School sixth-grader, second-place winner of a $75 savings bond; and Kristen Larson, a Tommy's Road fifth-grader and third-place winner of a $50 savings bond. Seventh- and eighth-grade winners were all from Rosewood Middle School. Ethan Brogden, a seventh-grader, was first-place winner of a $100 savings bond; Andy Seaman, an eighth-grader, received a $75 savings bond for second place; and Brittney McGill, eighth grade, was given a $50 savings bond for third place. The two top essays will compete at the state level for a chance to win a $250 savings bond. The state winners will move on to the national competition.
