Work could begin as early as Dec. 1 to replace an existing bridge on Lanetown Road (S.R. 1532) over the Nahunta Swamp north of Goldsboro.
The state Department of Transportation awarded the $736,651 contract to S.T. Wooten of Wilson during its Thursday meeting in Raleigh.
The work is expected to be done by Dec. 31, 2009.
The project includes replacing the current 24-foot-wide bridge with a 30-foot-wide structure. Approaches on each end of the new bridge will also be resurfaced.
The bridge will be closed to traffic and a detour will be in place.
Motorists traveling south on Lanetown Road will turn left onto Shackleford Road (S.R. 1616) then right onto Faro Road (S.R. 1058) cross into Greene County, turn right onto Wayne Mem-orial Drive (S.R. 1201), cross back into Wayne County (Wayne Memorial becomes S.R. 1556) and follow the road back to the intersection with Lane-town Road. Motorists wanting to access the north end of Lanetown Road will follow the reverse route.
