Larry Gene Garner Jr.
PRINCETON -- A man accused of sexual assaults against two children was arrested after a six-hour manhunt Monday, authorities said.
Deputies say they found Larry Gene Garner Jr. with two guns after he had made threats of suicide.
Sheriff Carey Winders and deputies searched for Garner off Charlie Braswell Road for six hours before finally locating his vehicle, Winders said.
Garner is accused of sexual assaults against an 8-year-old child and 10-year-old child. He has been charged with first-degree sexual offense and indecent liberties with a child, both felonies, and is being held under $300,000 secured bond.
Detective Sgt. Robert Chunn, Winders and other officers said they searched for hours for Garner's car before locating it on Capps Bridge Road, on U.S. 70 just east of Princeton. But when the vehicle was found, Garner wasn't inside.
Deputies knew they would have to act quickly, because they had learned Garner had made threats on his own life, Winders said.
Garner used a cell phone to tell a friend he planned to kill himself, and deputies found a suicide note in his car when they found it off Capps Bridge Road, the sheriff said.
The Sheriff's Office used a canine officer to find Garner in a wooded area, where he was armed with two handguns. He was arrested without incident, Capt. Tom Effler said.
