A Mazda CX-7 rests on its roof after it ran off the road, hit a tree and flipped this morning on Old Smithfield Road. One woman and an unknown number of children were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital. N.C. Highway Patrol officials had no further information as of press time.

Two separate wrecks this morning resulted in one fatality on U.S. 13 North, just north of George's Grill near Hood Swamp Road.

In the first on U.S. 13 North, a black female, possibly in her mid-20s, appeared to have been traveling south in a four-door Lexus car when she hydroplaned into the path of an 18-wheeler.

The truck driver was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.

No names or further information were available from the N.C. Highway Patrol as of press time.

In the other accident near 2463 Old Smithfield Road, a woman driving south in a Mazda CX-7 ran off the road, hit a tree and flipped her car, ending up inverted and facing north.

Trooper B.B. Grady of the N.C. Highway Patrol acknowledged weather conditions could have been a factor. The woman was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, as were an unknown number of children. Authorities said there were no serious injuries. No names were available as of press time.
