Man shot at door

A Goldsboro man was shot to death early today after answering a knock at the door at 1000 Devereaux St.
Investigators with the Goldsboro Police Department were on scene throughout the night and well into the morning collecting evidence after Alton Leevon Fields Jr., 35, of 1207 Best St., was shot shortly before 1 a.m.
Patrol officers responding to the call found Fields wounded inside the home, according to a police press release. He was taken by Emergency Medical Services to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Jasper Godwin, the resident of the home where the shooting took place, said Fields was shot when he got up and opened the door.
Godwin, 24, told investigators that all he saw was gunfire, according to the report.
Fields, Godwin and Starlit Frazier, 26, of 931 Hugh St. were in the house when the shooting started. Godwin and Ms. Frazier ran to the back of the house and returned to the front after the shots ended. They found that Fields had been wounded and Ms. Frazier called 911.
Police have not identified a suspect.
