James Henry Carney Sr., age 101, departed this life quietly on Thursday evening, February 5, 2004.

His distinguished career in education has touched many lives. Upon graduation from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in 1926, he began a teaching career at Albian Academy in Franklinton, N.C. He came to Wayne County as a teacher and principal at Dillard High School in 1928. Subsequently, he was principal of Vail, Buck Meadow, Bunn and Sasser's Mill Schools, respectively. He became the first principal of Norwayne School in Fremont, N.C., and retired as principal of Norwayne School in 1969.

In 1972, Mr. Carney was the first black elected to the Wayne County Board of Education. He was elected vice chairman of the Board in 1974 and elected chairman in 1975. He was appointed to the Wayne County Board of Elections in 1981 and was very active in voter registration.

He was on the Board of Trustees and a Trustee Emeritus at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, Goldsboro.

Throughout the years, his professional, political and community affiliations included the Wayne County Unite of the North Carolina Teachers' Association (NCTA), NCTA president of the Coastal Plain District, and member of the NCTA State Board of Directors. He was a Foster Grandparent, worked with Meals on Wheels, and was involved with the United Church Ministries. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

Celebrating his memory are his loving, faithful and devoted wife, Minnie, of the home; a son, James H. Carney Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Emily Mae Williams of Durham; three grandchildren, Patricia McKiver of Baltimore, Md., Gloria McCowen of Chicago, Ill., and Kathryn Carney of Atlanta, Ga.; a special devoted niece, Regina Budd of Washington, D.C.; three brothers-in-law, Doyle Greenfield and Stanley Grady, both of Dudley, N.C., and Monzell Greenfield of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Monday, February 9, 2004, from 3 until 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 South James Street, Goldsboro, N.C., and the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at 1 p.m. at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, 206 South George Street, Goldsboro, with the Reverend Daran Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at the C. Greenfield Memorial Park, Arrington Bridge Road, Dudley, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. James A.M.E. Zion Church Building Fund or the Norwayne Alumni & Friends Inc., James H. Carney Scholarship Fund, and sent to Mrs. Minnie G. Carney.
