Dr. James Lloyd Cox, 74, of 815 N. Spence Avenue, died Wednesday at his home.

Dr. Cox was born January 5, 1931, in Richlands, North Carolina, to the late Norwood and Hazel Nicholson Cox. He was an undergraduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a graduate of the School of Dentistry.

Dr. Cox began practicing dentistry in Goldsboro in 1958 and served the citizens of Wayne County for 44 years, retiring July 1, 2002.

He was a member of the Dental Foundation of North Carolina Inc., the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Association and the Wayne County Dental Society. Dr. Cox was a founding and faithful member of the Loblolly Dental Study Club, which he served for many years as secretary and treasurer.

Dr. Cox was a member and former president of Walnut Creek Country Club and a former member of the Wayne Country Day School Board. He had been an active member of his community in many civic organizations and a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, serving as chairman of the Finance Committee and the Administrative Board for several years.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Dr. Homer Morris and the Rev. Thurman Horney officiating. Private inurnment will be in the church columbarium.

Dr. Cox is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice Sylvester Cox; his sons, Louis and wife, Sarah, of Fayetteville, Will and wife, Judy, of Raleigh and John and wife, Ann, of Waynesville; his grandchildren, Charles, Alice, Caroline and Sam. He is also survived by grandchildren, Shannon, Megan, Cameron and their mother, Susan; his sister-in-law, Mararuth Cox of Wadesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Norwood Cox Jr.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut Street, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family will receive friends in the parlor of St. Paul United Methodist Church following the service on Friday.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
