WILMINGTON--Eddis Lamont Newsome, of 4206 Tillson Road, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.

Mr. Newsome was born in Wayne County to John D. Newsome of Goldsboro and the late Laulas Smith Newsome. He attended school in Pikeville and graduated from Pikeville High School in 1952. During school, he played baseball and worked part-time at the Hub clothing store in Goldsboro.

Mr. Newsome began his career with DuPont in 1953 at the Kinston Dacron Plant. There he held numerous positions in both manufacturing and maintenance. When Dupont expanded their Dacron operation to Wilmington in 1968, Eddis transferred there and assisted with plant start-up. He remained there until his retirement in 1985. After retirement, he founded Ed Newsome Hardwood Floors and worked until his declining health. Eddis retired again in 1998 and his son took over operation of the family business.

A celebration of his life will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Wilmington, of which he was a member. Rev. Dr. J.D. Herchenhahn and Rev. Alan Benson will officiate. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel in Goldsboro. Entombment will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro.

In addition to his father, Mr. Newsome is survived by his wife, Jean Barrow Newsome; his daughter, Connie Daniels and husband, Walter Ray of Goldsboro; his son, Monty Newsome of Wilmington; his sister, Novella Zambelli of Goldsboro; his brother, John W. Newsome, of Goldsboro; two grandchildren, Lynn Farrow and Mollie-Parker Newsome; and great-grandchild Morgan Cribb.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Ray Newsome.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church Building Fund, 1401 N. College Road, Wilmington, N.C. 28405.

The family will receive friends Friday following the service at Grace Baptist Church in Wilmington and Saturday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro. The family will gather on Saturday at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Walter Ray Daniels, 219 Hardingwood Drive, Goldsboro.

Arrangements are with Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro.
