MOUNT OLIVE -- Ryland H. Shaw, Sr., better known as "Mr. Ryland" to those who knew and loved him, died Monday, December 25, 2006 at the age of 81. He was born March 8, 1925 in rural Northampton County to the late John Albert and Nannie Cleaton Shaw. He grew up with his four brothers and two sisters on the farm he loved so much. He attended Gaston High School and following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years in the South Pacific.

In 1966 he and his youngest brother, Willis Breedlove Shaw, purchased Glenn-Martin Drug Company in Mount Olive. Following the death of his younger brother, "Mr. Ryland" continued the operation of the drug store which had spanned forty years. His customers and friends remember him as a caring man of infinite caring and compassion. There are countless stories of free ice cream cones and orangeades to such children spanning two generations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nannie Shaw; an infant brother, J.A. Shaw; his oldest brother, Robert Louis Shaw; a second brother, Warren Shaw; and the youngest brother and business partner, Willis Breedlove Shaw; and his oldest sister, Virginia Dorset. Shaw, Jr. of LaGrange; and three grandchildren, Ryland H. Shaw III, Mary Alyce Thacker, and Samuel Alexander Shaw.
