MOUNT OLIVE -- D. Burval Whitfield, 74, of 1296 Country Club Road, died early Wednesday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Steve Dixon and the Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Following the service, the family will then greet friends at the church, and at other times, they will be at the residence. Committal and burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

Mr. Whitfield was a veteran of the U. S. Army having been stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He was employed by W.R. Jennette Furniture Company in Mount Olive where he was co-owner and operator. He was a long-time member of the Thunder Swamp Church and was a former deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean Swinson Whitfield of the home; and three brothers and their wives, Lorenzo and Helen Whitfield of Newton Grove, the Rev. Marvin and Joyce Whitfield of Clinton, and the Rev. Jimmy and Regina Whitfield of Goldsboro, and Hetty M. Whitfield of Mount Olive, widow of a deceased brother.

Though he and Jean had no children, their nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews filled that void and were the "children they never had." He is also survived by Jean's brothers and their wives, the Rev. Jimmy and Joyce Swinson of Mount Olive, Donald and Nora Swinson of Richlands, and Clayton and Glenda Swinson of Mount Olive; another sister-in-law, Mavis B. Swinson of Mount Olive, widow of Jean's brother; and his business partners, Paul and Virginia Garrison of Mount Olive.

Those family members who have preceded him in death include his parents, James Albert and Ella Mae Hudson Whitfield; his sisters and brothers, Flossie W. Pipkin, Ralph A. Whitfield, Mavis Lee King, and J. G. Whitfield; Jean's parents, Elmer and Edna Swinson; and Jean's brother, Bruce Swinson.

The family gladly welcomes floral tributes, and for memorial donations, they request that Thunder Swamp P. H. Church be remembered (at c/o Liz King, 3516 Suttontown Rd., Faison, NC 28341).

A Tyndall Service, Mount Olive.
