Died Sept. 16, 2007

Robert Miller Howell, of the Hood Swamp Community, died Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, as a result of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro. A private graveside service will be held.

Howell was the husband of Velda Faye Smith Howell and the father of Bonnie Katrina Howell, also of the Hood Swamp Community.

Born in Fork Township, Wayne County, he was the son of the late Jarvis Benjamin Howell and Anna Ham Howell.

He was employed by Franklin Baking Company for 45 years.

Howell was a member of the Hood Swamp Friends Meeting (Quaker) and served in many capacities including youth leader and elder. He also served in Contentnea Quarterly Meeting of Friends, N.C. Yearly Meeting of Friends and had participated in Friends United Meeting comprised of Friends around the world. He served many terms on the board of Quaker Lake Summer Camp and Conference Center in Climax, N.C.

A supporter of Eastern Wayne High School athletics for many years, he was instrumental in selling ads for the sports program books.

Howell was an employee of Waynesborough Historic Village. He also served on the Wayne County Historical Association Board of Directors.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Howell is survived by three brothers, Norwood Howell and wife, Lorise, Floyd Howell and wife, Betty, and Lloyd Howell; two sisters, Mattie Howell Underwood and Dorothy "Dot" Howell Ham and husband, Nathan. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jarvis Benjamin "J.B." Howell Jr. Howell leaves behind two "adopted" sons, Cliffton "Nick" Nichols and Justin Harville, who performed many services for the family. Jay Worrell, a long-time friend, is recognized by the family for his invaluable support.
