Mrs. Gertrude A. Cox, lovingly known by her family and friends as "Gert," 1201 S. Slocumb St., was called by our Heavenly Father to her final resting place on Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. at New Spirit Church Ministries Inc., 1501 N. William St., with Dr. Freddie Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, 433 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. A viewing will be held on Friday at Hamilton Funeral Chapel, 423 S. James St., from 1 to 6 p.m.
Gert was born in Wayne County and she was the daughter of the late George and Ludie Aldridge Sr.
Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Cox.
She was a community leader, a retired educator and a founder of the Goldsboro Chapter of Continental Societies, Inc.
Precious memories of her love, moral, spiritual and physical support will be cherished in the hearts of her survivors; her brother, George Aldridge and wife, Lillie, of Greenville; a nephew, Harold Smith and wife, Eula, of Waldorf, Maryland; two special nephews, Bishop Allan Smith and wife, Cheryl, of Lillington and William A. Smith II and wife, Wanda, of Mitchellville, Md.; one special great-niece, Pearlniece Rhodes and husband, Thomas, of Goldsboro; three great-great nephews, Eric Smith of Fremont, Thomas Rhodes Jr. and Michael J. Rhodes of Goldsboro; and a host of other loving and devoted relatives and friends. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence of Mrs. Gertrude Cox, 1201 S. Slocumb St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
