Ginger was born in Richmond, Va., Aug. 27, 1934, to the late Eugene Gooch Currin Jr. and Margaret Ropp Currin.

She taught English as a second language classes and translated for expectant mothers and others in need with their doctor visits, where many medical providers did not speak Spanish. She also personally provided transportation to scores of these people for medical appointments across eastern North Carolina.

She was known at "Cita" or "Abuelita" (Grandmamma) to many children in the area.
