MOUNT OLIVE -- The Lord came and called Eula Jeanette Slate Wilkins Whaley, one of his faithful servants, home on Saturday, December 25, 2010. We know she is safe and happy with him today, her Lord and Savior.

Eula was born in Brunswick County to biological parents, Lucial and Mary Slate. She was the adopted daughter of Charlie and Sara Wilkins of Warsaw, N.C.

Eula was a native of Duplin County for 90 years and a resident of Mount Olive Care and Rehabilitation Center for the last two years.

She retired from Duplin General Hospital, where she worked for 20 years. She loved her work and all of her patients. She had so much love for them all. She was the most wonderful godly wife, mother and grandmother we could have had. She served the Lord with all of her heart. Her life was a manifestation of Jesus' love and kindness. She taught Sunday school for many years and worked hard for her church as long as she was able. She was a devoted member of Warsaw Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris W. Herring and husband, the Rev. James Herring of Mount Olive; one son, Herbert E. "Buddy" Whaley and wife, Mary Whaley of Kenansville; five grandchildren, Patricia Herring Harrell and Chris Herring of Mount Olive, Bert Whaley and Judy W. Sloan of Kenansville, and Susan W. Bell of Beulaville; nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She also has three stepgrandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.

Eula was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Herbert C. Whaley, her biological parents and her adopted parents, Charlie and Sara Wilkins; two brothers, John Slate Almond of Albermarle and Andrew Wilkins of Kenansville and three sisters, Mae Slate Almond Morton of Albermarle, Ruth Wilkins Whaley of Kenansville and Cassie Wilkins Dail of Mount Olive.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Community Funeral Home Chapel with visitation following the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Devotional Gardens.
