PIKEVILLE -- David H. Berry, 77, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

David was born in Wayne County May 11, 1934, to the late Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Berry.

He was a graduate of Nahunta High School class of 1952.

David served his country in the United States Army.

He was a retired member of Little River Fire Department with 49 years of service, and served as its treasurer for more than 23 years.

David was a devoted member of Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church for more than 50 years, serving in various capacities including deacon, church choir, building committee, chairman of the maintenance committee, secretary-treasurer of the Sunday school and many other committees.

He worked in various positions in the community including precinct judge for Little River during elections.

David especially enjoyed his church, friends, farming, watching sports car racing and his family.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sherman Dilley officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 10 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

David is survived by his wife, Martha Lane Berry; his daughter, Cathy Scher and husband, Chris, of Pikeville; his grandchildren, Brett Swain, Zachary Scher and Mikayla Scher all of Pikeville; and he enjoyed a son-like relationship with Kenneth Smith of Pikeville.

He is also survived by his sisters, Louise Phillips and husband, Bernice, of Goldsboro, Lula B.F. Little and husband, Billy, of Kenly, Julia Crumpler and husband, W.B., of Goldsboro and Margaret Radford and husband, Maurice, of Albemarle; his sister-in-law, Louvene Berry of Pikeville; and numerous loving nephews and nieces, who dearly loved "Uncle Dave."

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Harris Berry, and his brother, Leslie Berry.

The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at his residence, 3208 Pikeville-Princeton Road, Pikeville.

Although flowers are welcome, the family suggests that memorials be made to Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church, 1080 Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville, N.C., 27863
