Dora "Pokie" Strickland Brown, 71, passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family.

Pokie was born in Kendall, Fla., Dec. 19, 1940, to the late William and Eunice Turner Strickland. She was married to the late Hugh Allen Brown, who preceded her in death June 15, 2011.

Pokie retired from the Department of Motor Vehicles after 25 years of service.

She loved her church, and has attended Adamsville Baptist Church for more than 40 years.

Pokie always enjoyed being with her family, and she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

She was well known for her cooking and devotion of helping others. Pokie will also be remembered as an accomplished artist and landscaper.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Todd Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at her home.

Pokie is survived by her daughter, Tereasa Brown Segraves and husband, Thomas, of LaGrange; her son, Allen Brown II and wife, Beverly, of Pink Hill; her grandchildren, Christina Segraves, Heather Segraves, Hugh Allen "Trey" Brown III, Holly Brown and Ricky Brown; and her great-grandchildren, Destiny Jackson, Nevaeh Jackson, Preston Segraves and Alicen Brown.

She is also survived by her sisters, Bunny Davis and husband, Richard, of Lakewood, Colo., and Traska King and husband, James, of Barnesville, Ga., as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Brown Mosier; her brother, Marvin Strickland; her sister, Betty Jean Wright; her nephew, Johnny Strickland; and her brother-in-law, Edsel Brown.

The family would like to give special thanks to the fourth-floor staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital; the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center and Home Health and Hospice; her special nurses, Maria, Judy, Sherry, Sharon; and her nurse's assistant, Lisa Stanley; pastor Todd Wiggins and members of Adamsville Baptist Church; special friends, Linda, Shari, Michael, Jenny and Neil; as well as many other friends who offered love and support during Pokie's declining health.
