Arbutus Louise Pleasant Smith was born Sept. 20, 1939, to the late Walter Pleasant Sr. and Rachel Glover Pleasant in Pittsburgh, Pa. She departed this earthly life Friday, May 25, 2012, in Pikeville.

Walter and Rachel passed away at an early age. Louise was 6 years old when she came to North Carolina, and was reared by William and Annie Reid.

She joined New Bethel Original Free Will Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Summerville. She remained a faithful member until her death.

She worked for Wayne County Public Schools for more than 20 years, and retired in September 2004.

She was also a foster grandparent for WAGES.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father and two brothers.

She leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Valerie (Nelson) Grady of Pikeville; three sons, Louis (Regina) Pleasant of Nashville, Tenn., Kevin Smith of Fremont and Greg Smith of Pikeville; a brother, Walter (Lynette) Pleasant Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Annie Faye Lewis of Fremont; mother-in-law, Lula Smith of Fremont; 10 grandchildren, Latika Pleasant, Jade Holmes, Santavion Poole, Quwantay Poole, Juwan Fuller, Christopher Hall, Johnathan Smith, Jasmine Smith, Adrian Grady and Kevin Smith Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Trevion Cobb, Dorian Cruz, James Holmes and Mia Holmes; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, other relatives and many, many friends.

A visitation will be held Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at New Bethel Church in Fremont.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. James Disciples of Christ Church in Fremont.

Following the services in the sanctuary, Ms. Smith's delicate temple, along with her adored family, will be escorted by E.M. Matthews' angelic white fleet to Fremont Cemetery for interment rites.

Ms. Smith and the Smith family are in the hallmark of care at E.M. Matthews Funeral Home.
