PIKEVILLE -- Richard William Johnson, 76, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2012, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home in Goldsboro. Officiating will be the Rev. Michael L. Lewis.

Visitation will follow the service.

At other times the family will receive friends at the home of Darryl and Phyllis Johnson, 305 W. Ham St., Pikeville.

Richard was born in Rochester, N.Y., July 21, 1935, to the late Louis and Josephine Griffin Johnson.

After serving in the United States Air Force, he embarked on a long career as a professional truck driver.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Bessie Grace Johnson; four children of his own, Mike (Lynn) Johnson, Darryl (Phyllis) Johnson, Cheryl (James) Anders and Dean Lynn; four adopted children, Ricky Westbrook and Heather Johnson of Pikeville, Darryl Westbrook of Hawaii and Rose (Mike) Mitchell of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and wife, Fred and Myrtle Newcomb of Goldsboro; a special niece, Wendy Goff Sasser; special friends, Diane and Doug Jones, Gary Rollins, Chester Smith and David Hinnant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by a very special granddaughter and dedicated caregiver, Jeannie Delisi and husband, Robert Delisi. Their unselfish dedication to his care and well-being cannot be measured.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his stepmother, Dorothy Johnson; brothers, Jim Johnson and George Johnson; sister, Shirley Karczewski all of Chicago, Ill.; and his mother-in-law, Bessie Newcomb of the home.

Richard's great love for friends and family will never be forgotten. He always had a smile and never met a stranger.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart and Lung Association, American Diabetes Association, Community Home Care and Hospice or one's favorite charity.
