Barbara Mern Rustin passed away Nov. 5, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro, N.C.

A person of deep faith, Barbara died peacefully, secure in the knowledge that she would live again with her Lord and Savior.

Born in Selma, Ala., April 20, 1942, she spent her early years in Brooklyn, N.Y., and grew up in Syosset, N.Y.

Barbara gave many years of service as a secretary in hospital emergency rooms in Maine and New Hampshire.

Among her homes before arriving in Goldsboro were Rockland and Waldoboro, Maine and Keene, N.H. Her last years were spent living in Kirkwood Retirement Community.

Barbara is survived by her sisters, Jane and Belzora Rustin; nephews, Richard Rustin Perlungher (Nicole) of Indian Trail, N.C., and Thomas Henry Perlungher (Sarah) of Greenville, N.C.; and her adored great-nieces and nephew, Ellie, Grace and Jonathan Perlungher.

Kind and generous, Barbara was greatly loved by her family and friends.

A lover of all animals, Barbara gave a wonderful home to many rescued cats, who also became part of her family.

Her parents, Howard Frank Rustin, M.D., and Helen Mern Rustin, predeceased her.

Her family thanks Sonya Mozingo for her friendship and loving support of Barbara. Barbara's care from 3HC, first at home and then at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, was compassionate, extraordinary and appreciated beyond measure.
