MOUNT OLIVE -- Thanks to a welcome dose of sunshine Saturday to melt away the remainder of Thursday's snowstorm, today's Mount Olive College baseball and softball games will go on as scheduled.
The baseball team plays host to Barton in an NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Scarborough Field. The teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game series with a single game Monday at 3 p.m.
The softball team plays host to Shepherd (W. Va.) College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
In baseball, Mount Olive (10-4, 1-2 CVAC) is playing for the first time since Tuesday's 11-1 non-conference win against Shaw. The Trojans hope to rebound from their conference opening series at Pfeiffer last weekend, where they posted a 1-2 record.
Barton (5-6, 3-0) swept a three-game series against Anderson last week.
In softball, Mount Olive (1-4) is playing its first games since splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Newberry (S.C.) College a week ago today.
Shepherd's scheduled season opener at Barton yesterday was canceled due to the snow.
Trojans spike UNC
Mount Olive defeated the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 30-18, 30-22 in the championship match of the Mount Olive College Men's Volleyball Invitational contested Saturday at College Hall.
The Trojans went unbeaten in three matches and did not drop a game in any of the matches. They swept Liberty (30-21, 30-13), Appalachian State (30-18, 30-22) and UNC (30-23, 30-13) before meeting the Tar Heels again in the final.
Mount Olive returns to action March 20 in the James Madison University tournament.
Men's volleyball is a club sport at Mount Olive and will earn full varsity status beginning next year.
