Soccer -- Gators top Cougars

PINETOPS -- Spring Creek's Rachelle Mercatoris scored on an assist from Leslie Belden 10 minutes into the second half as the Gators blanked SouthWest Edgecombe on the road on Monday 1-0.
Spring Creek improved to 1-1 in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference/Classes 1-A Carolina/Super-Six Conference heading into Wednesday's match at home against James Kenan.
Cougar goalie Hope Tharrington had 21 saves in a game played primarily on Spring Creek's offensive end of the field.
"We had numerous shots and in the future we will need to capitalize on them," Spring Creek coach Michelle Cobb said.
Gator goalie Yoshiro Marrero had six saves in the win.
