DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Rachel Reynolds had a three-hit performance as the Saints claimed their first Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference win, topping West Carteret 5-1 on Tuesday.
The win improved the Saints to 3-4 overall.
Karen Thornton went the distance for Southern Wayne, striking out five and yielding no walks in seven innings of work. Thornton's one run allowed was not earned.
Thornton and Dominique Williams had two hits each for Southern Wayne, while Lesli Darden had a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI single to give the Saints the lead at 3-1 in the fifth.
Lindsay Jarnagin was applauded for a pair of defensive plays at shortstop -- hindering West Carteret rallies.
The Saints return to action March 30 at Eastern Wayne.
