DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Matthew Holloman tossed just 62 pitches in seven innings of work as the Saints got timely, balanced hitting and good defense in an 8-2 win against West Craven.
Holloman (1-1) struck out five and issued no walks in a three-hit effort.
"He had command of both sides of the plate, and he was throwing three pitches for strikes," Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee said. "When you are throwing strikes that often and they are making plays behind you, you get confidence when you are out there."
Holloman helped his cause with a two-RBI double, while Nathan Fail, Austin Hood and Josh Narron drove in one run each as the Saints charged to a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Matt Graham added a double and scored a run.
West Craven (5-6) fell to 4-4 in the conference.
Southern Wayne, now 5-6 and 3-5 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, plays hosts to Kinston on Thursday at 7 p.m.
