BEAR GRASS -- Spring Creek dropped just one match en route to an 8-1 victory against Bear Grass in the opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.
The Gators (16-2) prevailed in five of six singles matches and swept the doubles. Coach Robert Jones said his team will possibly receive a second-round bye since neither the Super Six nor Coastal Plains Conference fielded teams this season.
Therefore, Spring Creek advances to the eastern championship against either Durham School of the Arts or Gates County. That match will be played approximately in two weeks.
"That's ridiculous," Jones said. "We need to play somebody next week."
The Gators received individual wins from Cliff Wilson, Grey Wilson, Ricky Galloway, Phat Tran and Justin Smith. The tandems of Wilson-Wilson, Galloway-Will Daniel and Tran-Daniel Watson each claimed a doubles win.
Top-seeded Alan Mobley earned Bear Grass' lone win.
"I knew one was going to be tough to beat," Jones said. "He's a solid player and it's the first year that he's playing actual team tennis. He's played some USTA stuff.
"We went for that doubles match (win). Grey and Cliff played some good points on the tiebreaker to pull it out."
Wilson-Wilson, the two-time defending Carolina 1-A Conference doubles champions, knocked off Mobley-Steven Evans 9-8 (4).
