CBA Junior Legion opes with two wins

LAGRANGE -- Aycock's Junior American Legion baseball team opened it's inaugural season with a pair of wins.

Aycock won its first-ever game Thursday with a 6-3 win over Lenoir County at the North Lenoir diamond.

Wayne County used a three-run seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie. Will Spence went 3-for-3, while Bennett Jeffreys doubled, drove in three runs and went 2-for-4 and Joseph Toler went 2-for-3 and hit a home run. Stihl Sowers had a three-run home run for Lenoir County.

Jackson Massey threw two innings of late relief to get the win in a game that also had Jay Rose, Brandon Price and starter Brandon Edgerton on the mound.

On Saturday, Aycock shut out Ahoskie 8-0 as Edgerton and Brandon Price combined for a four-hit shutout with no walks allowed. Price went five innings and only faced one batter over the minumum with six strikeouts.

Thomas Pilkington was 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI, while Bradley Taylor 2-for-4 with a double and Will Spence was 2-for-4. Ahoskie exited the game at 3-1 and 0-1 in league play.

On Sunday, Pikeville travels to Southern Wayne's diamond to play Wayne County's Junior Legion team at 7 p.m.

Correction

In Friday's story on Spring Creek's regional championship dual-team tennis match, No. 2 singles player Cliff Wilson beat Durham School of the Arts' Victor Padilla 5-7, 6-2 (7-5). Spring Creek lost the match 5-1. Durham School of the Arts went on to lose to state 1-A champion Elkin in the final Saturday.
