PIKEVILLE -- Perennial eastern North Carolina tennis powers Charles B. Aycock and Greene Central staged a grueling, late-season match -- won by the Rams 5-4.
Aycock's number one and two doubles teams -- Leslie Sasser-Carlyn Claiborne and Raychel Batts-Nicole Taylor remained unbeaten with solid wins. Greene Central's Christi Murphy and Carolyn Turk won number three doubles 8-2.
In singles, Batts and Sasser claimed Aycock's only two wins at one and two, respectively. Greene Central's Summer Chase, Holly Mace, Murphy and Ashley Harrell went on to win in at spots four-through-six.
"It was a typical Aycock-Greene Central match with long points and close contested games," Aycock coach Luke Vail said. "Greene Central has great team depth and that was too much to overcome in the end. I was really proud of the quality of tennis played by all of our players."
Aycock (16-2) travels to Washington on Thursday, while the Rams (21-2) entertain Ayden-Grifton.
