FARMVILLE -- Farmville Central celebrated Homecoming with a solid thumping of Spring Creek Friday night, taking a 27-7 Class 1-A Carolina Conference victory.
The win allowed Farmville Central to keep pace with the leaders in the Carolina Conference, with a 2-1 league mark and a 3-5 overall record. Spring Creek exited with a 1-3 league slate and a 2-6 overall mark.
Gators coach Roy Whitfield said his team played well in the second half but allowed too many big plays in the early part of the game.
"A couple of big passes in the first half hurt us," he said.
One of those passes was a 70-yard completion from Brandon Austin to Justin Foskey for the Jaguars' second score of the night and a 14-0 lead. Two passes of 20 and 45 yards set up the game's first score, a six-yard run by Darrell Davis.
Yet another pass -- a 29-yard catch by Kajon Farrow -- enabled Farmville Central to get a third score before half, a 19-yard run by Richard Williams to take 21-0 lead into the locker room.
An interception took away a good chance for the Gators to score before halftime.
The second half was much more even, with Spring Creek allowing one more score and preventing the shutout with a 40-yard touchdown reception From Josh Wright to Lelo Burt -- his sixth touchdown catch of the season.
"I thought we played as good as we have all year in the second half, on both sides of the ball," said Whitfield. "They did some good things on the offensive and defensive sides. We'll try and use that as a positive and get ready for Rosewood next week."
Wright had 92 yards passing on six-of-15 attempts for the Gators, who host Rosewood on Friday.
