WASHINGTON -- Southern Wayne began Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action with a resounding 52-18 victory against Washington on Tuesday evening.
The Saints prevailed in nine of 14 weight classes and climbed to 2-1 overall. They return to the mats Saturday in the Swiss Bear Invitational at New Bern. First-round matches are scheduled for approximately 9 a.m.
Stephen Sloan, in his first-ever varsity match, recorded a pinfall at 103 pounds. Teammates Josh Richards (125 pounds), Doni Wilkins (189) and heavyweight Josh Robinson each recorded a pin.
Jonathan McKinney (112) and Thomas Mosshammer (130) each earned technical falls. Mike Faison (152) and Paul Williams (171) each turned in decisions, while Kevin Hash (145) and Ryan Bragg (160) won by forfeit.
