MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College tennis player Lucia Henkle was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's tennis player of the week, it was announced Wednesday. The award is the first this season and fourth all-time for Henkle, who earned player of the week honors twice last year and once during her freshman year.
Henkle's award gives Mount Olive back-to-back women's tennis player of the week winners. Lauren Harris won the award last week.
Henkle, a junior from Guatemala City, posted a 4-0 record at No. 1 singles last week, including a 3-0 mark in conference play. She rallied from one set down for a three-set victory over three-time All-CVAC first team selection Jane Lewis of Barton. Henkle also posted straight-set singles wins in conference matches against Belmont Abbey and Queens University of Charlotte.
For the season, Henkle is 8-0 in singles play against conference opponents, making her the only No. 1 singles player still unbeaten in conference play. The Trojans have one more conference match remaining.
Mount Olive (11-8 overall, 5-3 CVAC) plays a pair of matches against Division I opponents this weekend. The Trojans travel to Greenville on Friday to face East Carolina, then head to Wilmington on Saturday morning for a matchup against UNC-Wilmington.
