Hurricanes 10-Under qualify for Super WS

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Near-flawless defense and aggressive hitting enabled the Hurricanes 10-Under softball team to claim the World Fast-pitch Connection Class B World Series title last weekend.

The Hurricanes finished 6-1 and qualified for the Super World Series scheduled for Aug. 26-28 in Charleston, S.C.

"We played unbelievable defense and only struck out 14 times in seven games," said assistant coach Charles Davis. "We put the ball in play and played great defense. We committed just four errors in seven games.

"That was the reason we won. It was amazing to watch them play."

The Hurricanes, coached by Philip Jordan, finished 3-0 in pool play. They opened the tournament with a 3-1 decision against in-state foe Wilson Lookouts; and collected back-to-back shutouts against South Carolina Crushers (8-0) and South Carolina Xtreme (4-0).

The next three contests occurred against another in-state rival -- Johnston County. The Hurricanes rallied for a 9-8 victory in double-elimination play, but the Clippers wanted another shot and toiled their way through the losers' bracket.

When the teams met again, the Clippers prevailed 6-5. The Hurricanes prevailed 4-1 in the winner-take-all final.

It was the second World Series title for Connor Davis, Catherine Ford, Rachel Jordan, Brooke Bell and Madison Davis. That quintet participated on last year's team that took the 10U Super World Series crown in Peoria, Ill.

"The girls have done a great job all year," said coach Davis.

The Hurricanes collected their sixth title in 11 tournament appearances this season.
