PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock opened its 2005 women's tennis campaign with an 8-1 thrashing of non-conference foe Southern Nash on Tuesday afternoon.

Raychel Batts, Carlyn Claiborne, Nicole Taylor, Laine Purcell, Lizzie Sodoma and Kristen Prosser each collected a straight-set victory for the Golden Falcons.

Prosser-Katie Perry and Sodoma-Emilee Quinn each triumphed in doubles.

C.B. Aycock (1-0) travels to Clayton today. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

Rams' match suspended

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rain suspended play in Greene Central's season-opening, non-conference tilt against Rocky Mount Senior High on Tuesday afternoon.

The teams had reached the second set in singles before rain stopped play.

The match will resume Thursday afternoon at Sunset Park.

Hawks drop opener

BEULAVILLE -- North Lenoir opened its 2005 season with an 8-1 non-conference loss at East Duplin.

The Hawks' No. 2 doubles of Heather Phillips-Haley Bright emerged the lone winner with an 8-1 decision against Leeanna Outlaw-Meredith Gray.

North Lenoir (0-1) faces East Duplin again Aug. 31.

Gardner paces Eagles

Hayden Gardner tallied a pair of first-half goals as Wayne Christian turned back Northwood Temple 4-1 in a Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference men's soccer contest Tuesday afternoon.

Gardner scored in the ninth and 31st minute off assists from Brian Alexander..

Eric Williams provided an unassisted goal in the second minute. Williams assisted Matt Davis for a goal in the 36th minute.

Wayne Christian goalie Travis Thomas notched four saves.

"We're a very young team and we really needed this win," said coach Dean Williams, who has no juniors or seniors on his roster.

The Eagles (1-2, 1-1 CCC) is the guest of Community Christian of Wilson on Friday.


Aycock sweeps Fike

WILSON -- Senior outside hitter Kandace Burroughs provided eight kills as Charles B. Aycock swept Wilson Fike 25-20, 25-14, 25-19 in both teams' season-opening match Tuesday afternoon.

Laura Thigpen served five aces.

"We looked pretty good at times when we attaacked the ball, we were inconsistent," said Aycock coach Davis Harris. "Fike did a lot of free ball and we kind of fell into that a couple of times. Overall, it wasn't a bad match."

The teams meet again next Tuesday in Pikeville.


CBA spikers roll

WILSON -- Bridgette Briggs picked up six service aces and five kills in Charles B. Aycock's season-opening 25-11, 25-13 conquest of Wilson Fike. Aycock (1-0) entertains Fike next Tuesday. Match time is 4:30 p.m.


Shearin, Hilburn shine

Theresa Shearin emerged the low net and game-of-the-week winner for play ending Aug. 21 at Lane Tree Golf Course. Linda Hilburn claimed low putts.


Moye-Debevec Sr. triumph

KERR LAKE -- The tandem of Joe Moye-Jon Debevec Sr. claimed the Hawg Breath Bass Club's second tournament of the season at Kerr Lake. Moye also picked up big-fish honors. The next tournament is scheduled for Sept. 17 at Falls Lake.
