WILSON -- Wayne Christian opened its regular season with a 9-0 win at Community Christian of Wilson on Monday.

All six singles matches were won in straight sets as Laura Lee Hodson, Mary West, Bianca Wall, Chris Hoeper, Catie Fairchild and Stacy McCary collected singles wins for the Eagles. In doubles, the combinations of Hodson-West at No. 1 and Fairchild-McCary at No. 3 won in straight-set fashion, while Wall-Hoeper at No. 2 needed a tie-breaker to defeat Brooke Hawkins and Dava Peterson.

Wayne Christian (1-0) takes on Wayne Country Day on Friday.

Eastern Wayne swept all three doubles matches with Lauren Bynum serving an ace on match point at No. 2 doubles as the Warriors claimed a 5-4 win over New Bern at home on Monday.

Bynum and teammate Catie Musgrave won 8-6 at No. 2, while Ashley Smith and Brandi Butts (No. 1) and Molly Musgrave and Sami Abrahamson (No. 3) also claimed victories.

In singles, Eastern Wayne managed just two wins as Butts and Molly Musgrave emerged at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday at Wilson Fike.

Aycock outlasts

Tarboro High

TARBORO -- Charles B. Aycock's Raychel Batts and Carlyn Claiborne emerged with wins in both singles and doubles as the Golden Falcons defeated Tarboro 5-3 on the road on Monday. Batts and Claiborne, along with Nicole Taylor and Kristen Prosser helped Aycock take 4-of-6 singles matches. In doubles, Batts and Claiborne won at No. 1, while Tarboro's Jasmine Burroughs and Miranda Spain emerged at No. 2. The third doubles match was not finished due to darkness.

Aycock (3-1) travels to Southern Nash today.

Southern Nash

BAILEY -- Greene Central won its third straight match with a 9-0 whitewash of Southern Nash on Monday at the Firebirds' courts.

The Rams (3-1) got singles wins from Meredith Rouse, Christi Murphy, Ashley Harrell, Michelle Jernigan, Brittany Horton and Elizabeth Cooper. In doubles, the combos of Rouse-Harrell, Murphy-Horton and Jernigan-Cooper helped Greene Central complete the sweep.

Greene Central returns to action on Wednesday at Rocky Mount.

Warriors topple

New Bern

Eastern Wayne's Lyndsey Frederick and Elizabeth Borden claimed singles wins as the Warriors defeated New Bern 5-1 at home on Monday.

The Warriors swept the doubles matches with the combinations of Frederick-Borden, Sarah Corley-Kelsie Yates and Emily Northington-Kate Brantley all winning in straight-set fashion. Numbers 4-6 singles were not completed due to darkness.

Sutton's late goal

big for Hawks

KINSTON -- North Lenoir's Brandon Sutton scored with three minutes left as the Hawks defeated rival Kinston 4-3.

Tyler Smith notched two goals in the first half for North Lenoir, while Alex McGaughy also scored in the first half. Ricky Jarman and Justin Carr had one assist each for the Hawks (2-2).

North Lenoir travels to East Duplin on Wednesday.

Cross country

EW splits with Fike

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne's girls and Wilson Fike's boys emerged with cross country victories in a dual meet at the Gilette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

The Warrior girls, who had 15 team points, were paced by a second-place finish from Helen Baddour (24:25), while Natalie Taylor (27:53) and Lyddia Hirschy (27:57) finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Fike took four of the top-five spots, but did not have enough runners to garner a team score.

In the boys meet, the Golden Demons outscored the Warriors 21-39, but Eastern Wayne's Michael Lawrence (19:21) won the race. Joey Burridge (21:42) and Paul Wruck (22:15) were the next-best Warrior runners at sixth and ninth, respectively. Fike took spots 2-5.

Eastern Wayne's boys are missing one of their top returning runners in Matt Interrante, who will miss the next two weeks with a sprained ankle.

The Warriors begin competition in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference with a meet at Wilson Hunt on Sept. 6.

South Lenoir

sweeps GC

SNOW HILL -- South Lenoir's Coleman Heath (17:17) and Jess King (23:14) claimed first place in a two-team meet at Greene Central as the Blue Devils claimed wins. South Lenoir's boys edged the Rams 26-29, while the Blue Devil girls finished with 19 team points as the Greene Central girls did not score due to lack of runners.

Greene Central's Tony Tyson (20:36) and Lance Murray (20:48) finished second and third respectively. In the girls meet, Blair Carraway (28:28) and Ashley Oakes (28:29) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Rams host Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday.
