Eastern Wayne duo, relay team qualifies for state 3-A meet

BAILEY -- Eastern Wayne's Genia Baker and Noelle Kelly each recorded a top-four finisher and qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A track and field championships scheduled for later this week.
Baker recorded a personal-best time of 25.64 seconds in the 200 and took fourth place on the Firebird Stadium track at Southern Nash Senior High. Kelly emerged second in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.02.
Kelly and Baker participated on the 1,600-meter relay team that also qualified for the state finals. Along with Nikki Allen and Alysa Artis, the foursome posted a runner-up time of 4:07.5.
The same quartet turned in a fifth-place time of 1:46.55 in the 200-meter relay. They missed qualifying for the state meet by a mere .33-hundredths of a second.
Richelle Butler seized sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 9 inches.
The state finals are scheduled for Friday at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro.

Wayne Country Day 11, Rosewood Indians 4 -- Aaron Debusk and Cole Davis (6 strikeouts) combined for the pitching win. Davis (home run), Cody Neal (triple), Jamie Van Horn (3 hits) and Hill Tanner (2 hits) emerged the top offensive performers. Wayne Country Day (8-0) faces Rosewood Eagles today at 7:45 p.m. at the Boys and Girls club.
