KINSTON -- K-Tribe starter Chuck Lofgren fanned a season-high 10 batters and picked up his 14th win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Lynchburg on Thursday night at Grainger Stadium.
Lofgren (14-5) went six innings and gave up three hits, one earned run and two walks and moved into a tie for the minor league lead in wins. He's now just one victory shy of the modern-day club record of 15 wins, set by Brian Slocum in 2004. Lofgren struck out nine of the first 13 batters he faced, including the first four Lynchburg batters of Thursday's game.
Lofgren got all the run support he needed in the first inning when Jose Constanza and Brandon Pinckney led off the game with back-to-back singles. Both later scored on RBI hits by Stephen Head and Rodney Choy Foo.
Kinston (22-18 second half, 69-41 overall) added a run in the fifth inning when Argenis Reyes led off with a double and later scored on an RBI ground out by Jordan Brown.
Javi Herrera and Reyes each went 2-for-4 for Kinston.
K-Tribe releivers Michael Finnocchi, Mariano Gomez and T.J. Burton combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Burton picked up his 17th save of the season.
Kinston sends Joe Ness (9-3, 3.40) to the mound today at 7 p.m. for game two of the three-game series against the Hillcats (12-26, 36-62).
