GRAHAM -- An interception return for a touchdown and a blocked punt in the third quarter fueled Southern Alamance's 42-15 victory over Charles B. Aycock on Friday evening.
The 11th-seeded Patriots forced five turnovers and eliminated the 14th-seeded Golden Falcons from the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-AA (large-school) playoffs. Aycock endured its fourth defeat in its last five outings and concluded the year 8-5 overall.
Tied at 7-7, Southern's Devon Wallace picked off a Thomas Pilkington pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. It was one of three interceptions thrown by Pilkington, who also threw two touchdown passes.
The Patriots tallied two third-quarter scores, including one set up by the blocked punt. They added two fourth-quarter touchdowns until Pilkington closed out his prep career with an 11-yard scoring strike to Kelton Lewis.
Pilkington completed 10 of 22 passes for 151 yards. Montez Ham hauled in four receptions for 68 yards, including a 43-yard scoring pass in the opening quarter. Joseph Toler snagged four catches for 53 yards, while Michael King caught one pass covering 19 yards.
An injured Dontay Taylor and Toler shared a team-high 54 yards rushing.
Aycock owned a 295-283 edge in total offense.
Southern Alamance tailback Thomas Sappelt emerged the game's top rusher with 178 yards on 24 totes. Quarterback Luke Vandall connected on 5 of 17 passes for 62 yards.
