SMITHFIELD -- Josh Darden led four Southern Wayne players in double figures with 16 points, and the Saints opened their season with a 69-55 victory over Smithfield-Selma on Tuesday evening.
Orlando Davis added 15 points for the Saints, who presented Russell Royal his first win in his coaching debut. Jon Hart contributed 13 points and Paris Armwood tallied 10.
Southern Wayne returns to action at home Monday against Triton.
Tennis
Goldsboro Fall Championships held
Eastern Wayne's Ben Wines, who helped the Warriors claim their first-ever playoff victory in men's tennis last spring, emerged the boys' 18 singles champion in the recently-contested Goldsboro Fall Championships at Herman Park.
Chaz Fitzpatrick finished runner-up to Wines.
Singles winners were: Gianna Demock (Girls 10), Jentry Carlyle (Girls 12), Amber Bowden (Girls 16), Michael Sutton (Boys 12), Woody Sasser (Boys 14) and Junior Johnson (Men's).
In doubles, Mark Hess-Matt Ames emerged the men's champions. Smiley-Taylor Gurley claimed the boys' 14 title, while Kim Reyer-Brooke Bell captured the women's championship.
Golf
Walnut Creek Ladies Association
Jewel Ivey won the Club Championship in the ladies division in the 2-day event at Walnut creek Country Club. Mary Ann Sutton was runner-up and Linda Cannon emerged the first flight winner.
In the Eastern Ladies tournament held at the Emerald Country Club, Sutton won low gross in second flight.
In this week's tournament play, Sutton won play of the day , while Brooke Eason took low gross and Josie Ottaviani low net.
Faye franklin claimed low putts.
