Goldsboro girls pick up first EPC 2-A win of season

BETHEL -- Kianna Williams delivered a 17-point, five-assist outing in Goldsboro High's 54-33 trouncing of North Pitt in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action Tuesday evening.

The Cougars (3-15 overall) claimed their first EPC victory of the season in five tries.

"We played well defensively and got a lot of stops, which (we) converted quickly for us into transition," said first-year Goldsboro coach Brandy Smith. "We played together and distributed the ball well. We played with confidence and it showed on the floor."

Johneisha Maye contributed eight points and six rebounds. Victoria Williams and senior center Carmille Early posted six points apiece. Millicent Kornegay added six rebounds and four points in a reserve role.

Goldsboro entertains Tarboro on Friday.

Wilson Hunt

upends Saints

WILSON -- Alyssa Bradshaw provided a team-high 12 points, all from 3-point range, in Southern Wayne's 60-42 loss at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Hunt.

Lynneshia Leonard added seven points for the Saints. Teammates Brianna Lofton and Jameka Allen contributed five points apiece.

Chelsea Atkinson poured in a game-high 22 points for Hunt. Crystal Smith chipped in 13.

Southern Wayne (7-10 overall) remained winless in five ECC outings and entertains county archrival Eastern Wayne on Friday.

Conquerors fall

in NCCSA 2-A ranks

ROCKY MOUNT -- Poor shooting and turnovers proved costly for Faith Christian in a 47-22 loss at N.C. Christian Schools Athletic Association Coastal 2-A leader Falls Road Baptist.

Alyssa Hill led the Conquerors with nine points. Madison Caudle pulled down 10 rebounds and Renee Provencal recorded three steals.

"We had a bad shooting night," said Faith Christian coach Eddie Smith. "Poor shooting and turnovers made it hard on us. But I thought we played fairly good defense for most of the night on their top players."

Faith Christian (6-8 overall) fell to 3-5 in NCCSA 2-A play.

Wayne Christian

endures CCC defeat

ERWIN -- Brittany Sullivan pumped in 18 points as Wayne Christian endured a 70-60 loss at Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday evening.

Michelle Krug added 12 points, three assists and one steal for the Eagles. Teammate Hope Wright contributed 10 points and two rebounds. Brooke Norris chipped in nine points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Wayne Christian (5-7 overall) dipped to 3-4 in CCC play and welcomes Bethel Christian for a non-conference game on Monday.


Faith Christian

extends win streak

ROCKY MOUNT -- Aaron Sladick and Jeremy Sandlin each delivered a double-double and Faith Christian cruised past Falls Road Baptist 54-41 on Tuesday evening.

Sladick collected a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Sandlin added 13 points and a team-high 13 boards. T.J. Sasser chipped in 14 points.

The Conquerors (16-1 overall) claimed their 14th consecutive win and remained unbeaten in eight N.C. Christian School Association Class 2-A Coastal Region contests.

Cougars prevail

in EPC 2-A action

BETHEL -- Tim Kornegay tallied 26 points and Daquan Joyner delivered a double-double in Goldsboro's 65-61 road win at Eastern Plains 2-A foe North Pitt.

Joyner contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots for the Cougars. Tim Hobbs added eight points and Eric McLean scored six.

Goldsboro converted 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and 16 of 22 overall for the game. The Cougars owned a 45-38 edge in rebounds, forced 24 turnovers defensively and recorded 11 assists and steals as a team.

"I thought Treme Boone played very well, and we got great minutes from Antonio Green and Brandon Sampson," said Goldsboro coach Randy Jordan.

The Cougars (12-7 overall, 2-3 EPC) entertain Tarboro on Friday.

Greene Central

upends EPC rival

LaGRANGE -- Chevalier Howell poured in a game-high 26 points and Greene Central remained the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference leader with an 81-71 victory over North Lenoir.

The Rams climbed to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in the EPC.

Albert Barron added 15 points, while senior Brandon Sutton chipped in 14. Curtis Braswell provided 10 points.

Four Hawks scored in double figures, led by Joe Whitfield with 19. Tim Roberts contributed 13, followed by D.J. Artis (12 points) and Marquez Powell (10).

Greene Central entertains North Pitt on Friday.

Southern Wayne

loses to Hunt

WILSON -- Anthony Vick tallied 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Southern Wayne's 65-59 loss at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference leader Wilson Hunt.

Orlando Davis knocked down 15 points and Kendrick Thompson added 10 for the Saints.

Kason Cheeks led the Warriors with 17 points.

"It was a real good physical game and I thought our guys kept a level head," said Southern Wayne coach Russell Royal. "I was proud of them."

Southern Wayne (8-9 overall, 2-3 ECC) entertains archrival Eastern Wayne on Friday.

tumbles in CCC

ERWIN -- State-ranked Cape Fear Christian stopped Wayne Christian 59-47 on the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference scene Tuesday evening.

Eric Williams led the Eagles' attack with 17 points, while Shea Gleasman added 12 points.

Wayne Christian (7-9 overall, 4-5 CCC) entertains Johnston Christian on Friday.


Eastern Wayne

thumps Princeton

Eastern Wayne prevailed in 10 of 11 contested matches and rolled to a 72-5, non-conference decision over Princeton on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors collected eight falls, two decisions and benefited from three forfeits. Freshman Drew Tesar (103 pounds), Jordan Harris (119) and Grant Nix (125) each received a forfeit.

Corbin Harris (112), Chris Tesar (130), James Knight (135), A.J. Washington (140), Detori Mitchell (145), Brandon Darby (171), Jonathan LaGrone (189) and Brandon Johnson (215) each pinned their respective opponent. Johnson had the fastest pin at 33 seconds, followed by Knight (57 seconds).

Brian Lincoln earned a 4-0 decision at 160 pounds and heavyweight Foy Coley seized a 6-4 win over Jon Hartley.

Kent Boyette (152) emerged the Bulldogs' lone individual victor.

Eastern Wayne (13-4 overall) plays host the Warrior Quads on Friday. The Warriors are scheduled to wrestle against J.H. Rose, Triton and Nash Central.

Princeton is the guest of Spring Creek on Friday.

posts comeback

North Duplin posted a game-ending 10-0 run and claimed a come-from-behind 50-44 victory over Rosewood in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Xavier Lee tallied the go-ahead basket off an offensive rebound to help the Rebels (4-9 overall) pick up their second Carolina win in five tries. Teammates Akeem Cox, Quintin Graham and Blake King combined to convert 4 of 7 free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the comeback.

King led four North Duplin players in double figures with 15 points. Graham and Lee contributed 12 apiece, while Cox chipped in 10.

Zach Mangum emerged Rosewood's top scorer with 15 points. Josh Davis and Will Beasley recorded nine points apiece.

Rosewood fell to 3-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Pitt, LaFlamme

pace Aycock attack

Tyheim Pitt and Kyle LaFlamme scored 17 points apiece in a 50-48 thriller over Eastern Wayne on Tuesday afternoon.

Hassan Best led the Warriors with 13 points.

C.B. Aycock (7-12 overall) improved to 3-2 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Seth Denlinger paced Faith Christian's offense with 10 points in a 48-29 victory at N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A rival Falls Road Baptist on Tuesday afternoon.

David Sladick added eight points for the Conquerors.

Faith Christian improved to 12-1 overall.

WILSON -- James Jones and Montario Brewington scored eight points apiece in Southern Wayne's 61-40 loss at Wilson Hunt.

up EPC 2-A win

LaQuita Holmes led three Goldsboro players in double figures with 15 points in a 46-33 conquest of Eastern Plains 2-A Conference rival North Pitt.

Lakiyah Campbell and Ashley Thompson added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Cougars. Tiffany Pearsall chipped in five.

Goldsboro (5-11 overall) improved to 1-2 in EPC play and travels to Tarboro on Friday. North Pitt exited 0-8 overall.

Caudle collects


ROCKY MOUNT -- Madison Caudle recorded a double-double -- 14 points, 10 rebounds -- in Faith Christian's 21-14 victory at Falls Road Baptist School on Tuesday afternoon.

"Madison played a good, all-around game," said Faith Christian coach Eddie Smith.

Christina Powell and Elizabeth Weeks scored three apiece for the Conquerors, who improved to 6-3 overall.

Eagles slide

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian remained unbeaten in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play with a 28-27 victory over Cape Fear Christian.

Hanna Kaler led the Eagles with 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Charity Wright provided six points and two rebounds. Jennifer Price and Charlie Ipock added five points and six rebounds apiece.

Wayne Christian (7-2 overall, 2-0 CCC) entertains Johnston Christian on Friday.

PIKEVILLE -- Jalisa Moore poured in a team-high 14 points in Eastern Wayne's 43-33 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A rival C.B. Aycock on Tuesday afternoon.

Cady May added eight points and Alta Black provided six.

Eastern Wayne (9-3 overall) remained unbeaten in four ECC outings and plays host to archrival Southern Wayne on Friday. Tip-off is 4:30 p.m.

Warriors snap

Cougars' streak

Goldsboro High is no longer unbeaten in 2007.

Jacarr Kelly led three Eastern Wayne players in double figures with 14 points in a 64-53 victory Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors (2-8 overall) snapped the Cougars' four-game win streak.

Kelly also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out six assists in the non-conference, county affair. Chris Hines added a double-double -- 10 points, 14 rebounds. Jamarcus Thomas contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.

Josh Coley picked the Cougars for five steals. Zerell Davis and Joseph Dicesare grabbed 10 and nine rebounds, respectively.

Eastern Wayne entertains archrival Southern Wayne on Friday.
