Trojan women picked 5th in CVAC golf poll

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive has been picked fifth in the 2007 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Preseason Women's Golf Poll, as voted on by the CVAC coaches. Kate Somek and Kristin Moberg have been selected among CVAC preseason "Players to Watch."

Somek, a senior from Sudbury, Ontario, earned All-Tournament honors at the 2005 CVAC Championship, setting a school 18-hole record at the time with a 77 in the final round. Somek was also named to the 2005 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 3 Second Team.

Moberg, a freshman from Gavel, Sweden, had the Trojans' lowest average score during the fall season. She finished third at the St. Andrews Fall Invitational and helped lead the Trojans to a team title. Mount Olive received 17 points in the poll, one point behind fourth-place Queens. The Trojans were picked sixth in last year's preseason poll, but finished third at the 2006 CVAC Championship. Defending champion Pfeiffer received six first-place votes and finished first in the poll with 36 points. Anderson received the remaining first-place vote and received 31 points in the poll. MOC opens its 2007 season this weekend at Kiawah Island, S.C., as the Trojans compete in the Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Intercollegiate. The 36-hole tournament begins Saturday and concludes Sunday.
