Wayne Christian, WCDS eliminated from NCISAA 1-A playoffs
GASTONIA -- Eric Williams pumped in a team-high 17 points, but Wayne Christian dropped a 71-54 decision against Gaston Day in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs.
Williams pulled down seven rebounds for the 10th-seeded Eagles. T.A. Brannan contributed 13 points and seven rebounds. Nick Woods provided 13 points and four assists.
Shea Gleasman added eight points.
Wayne Christian concluded the year 12-12 overall.
CHARLOTTE -- Point guard Floronta Wynn tallied 27 points in Wayne Country Day's season-ending, 92-72 loss at United Faith Christian Academy in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.
Ajay Fowler added 12 points for the 11th-seeded Chargers, who finished the year 9-14 overall. Jeff Franklin contributed nine points, while David Wilson chipped in seven.
Seniors Shadoe Stewart (eight points), Lamar Carpenter and Kyle Pender played their final game for WCDS.
LAKE WACCAMAW -- State-ranked East Columbus drained 10 three-pointers and ousted North Duplin 85-59 in an opening-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoff game on Monday.
The Gators, ranked No. 10 in the NCPreps.com 1-A poll, entertain Spring Creek at 7 p.m. today. The game is a rematch of last year's sectional semifinal won by the Creek at Kenansville Memorial Auditorium.
Chris Graham paced North Duplin with 19 points, while Orlando Midgette contributed 16. Doug Lloyd added nine.
Jerry Moore led East Columbus with 20 points.
North Duplin finished the season 3-14 overall.
Union clips Eagles
CLINTON -- State-ranked Union held Rosewood to single-digit scoring in each period and claimed a 51-33 victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday evening.
Kasie Braswell emerged the Eagles' top scorer with 11 points. Senior Courtney Hill added eight, while Haile Meadows chipped in seven.
Cortney Graham led Union with 13.
Rosewood concluded its season 13-10 overall. Union, ranked No. 4 in the latest NCPreps.com poll, improved to 23-1 and travels to East Bladen on Thursday.
ousted from playoffs
HAVELOCK -- Havelock turned back Charles B. Aycock 38-37 during opening-round play in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs Tuesday evening.
Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season and tournament champion North Lenoir outlasted Warren County. Greene Central couldn't protect its home court in a loss against Southern Vance.
On the 1-A scene, Pender County toppled Princeton 57-33 and North Johnston crushed James Kenan 69-33.
