KINSTON -- John Drennen's second-inning home run and a seven-run outburst in the third inning catapulted Kinston to a 10-3 victory over Myrtle Beach on Wednesday evening.
The K-Tribe won the series 2-1 and took a three-game lead over Pelicans in Southern Division play. Kinston collected its 68th win of the season and is 30 games over .500.
Jerad Head got plunked to ignite the third-inning uprising. Jose Constanza walked and both players advanced on the double steal. Pelicans starter Jeff Lyman threw a pitch in the dirt and both runners scored.
Kinston reloaded the bases on a Josh Rodriguez walk and back-to-back singles from Stephen Head and Matt Whitney. Drennen (2-for-4, four RBI) cleared the bases with a three-RBI single to make it 7-0.
Armando Camacaro plated Drennen with a sacrifice fly and Mike Butia capped the inning with a solo home run. The K-Tribe added a single run in the fourth off Stephen Head's RBI single. Head and Whitney finished with two hits apiece.
Kinston starter Steven Wright earned first-ever Carolina League win with a six-inning, six-hit effort. Relievers Matt Meyer and Kyle Collins mopped up the final three innings.
Lyman fell to 0-2.
The K-Tribe begins a three-game series tonight against Lynchburg. Frank Herrmann (7-5, 3.92 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Kinston. Game time is 7 p.m. at historic Grainger Stadium.
