TEACHEY -- After a frustrating opening-night loss with many classic first-game mistakes, Southern Wayne showed drastic improvement in week two.
Even with the improved play, the Saints couldn't quite get over the hump as they fell on the road to Wallace-Rose Hill 22-14 on Friday night.
Kelvin Flow had a big night running the ball, chewing up the Bulldogs defense for 209 yards on 21 carries.
"Kelvin had several big runs of 15-plus yards," said Southern Wayne head coach Bob Warren. "There were many times on those runs where he broke tackles."
Tristan Bass also stepped up with 124 yards on the ground as the Saints rushed for 330 yards collectively.
"We blocked much better tonight," said Warren. "Our running backs ran really hard. They got extra yards after contact."
The Saints jumped out to an 8-0 second-quarter lead when Flow blew by the Bulldogs defense for a 37-yard score and a subsequent two-point conversion run.
Wallace-Rose Hill answered less than a minute later with a touchdown of its own. The Bulldogs' special teams then blocked a Southern Wayne punt and returned it 25 yards for the score and a 14-8 lead heading into the halftime.
In the second half, Southern Wayne and Flow tied the game. On their opening drive of the third quarter, the Saints marched down the field and Flow bolted in from 20-yards out for the score to make it 14-14.
With 2:33 to go in the quarter, Wallace answered with a touchdown and two-point conversion which proved to be the winning score.
Even with the loss, Warren was pleased with some of the improvements he saw from Southern Wayne's first game. It was critical mistakes though that killed the Saints on drives.
"Our kids played extremely hard and we made a lot of improvement from the previous week," said Warren. "We still need to cut down on our mistakes. We had key penalties on drives that stalled them out."
Southern Wayne, now 0-2, will seek its first win next Friday when it travels to Farmville Central.
