Mount Olive menÕs tennis team secures first win of season

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Kristin Moberg tied for 25th out of 90 golfers as Mount Olive finished 16th out of 18 teams at the Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Intercollegiate during the weekend.
Moberg shot a 159 and came within six strokes of a top-15 finish at Cougar Point Golf Course. Teammate Kristen Freeman tied for 59th at 174, while freshman Brooke Newell posted a 36-hole total of 191. Lindsey Becker contributed a 208.
The Trojans carded a team score of 732 to break away from a tie and end up six shots ahead of Lincoln Memorial. Nationally top-ranked Florida Southern emerged the team champion.
Mount Olive reteurns to action Feb. 18-19 in the Mars Hill College Tournament at Sunset Beach.
Trojan men prevail
MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive swept the doubles matches and cruised past in-state foe Methodist 8-1 on the Walker Tennis Center courts Saturday afternoon.
The No. 1 tandem of Guilherme Serra-Vitor Lage, ranked No. 7 in the region, posted an 8-5 victory. The duos of Fred Barros-Indra Mitra and Alex Queiros-Aldo Barba also claimed easy victories.
Lage, Barros, Queiros, Mitra and Murilo Pelegrino each earned a singles point. The quintet combined to lose just 12 games in 10 sets.
Methodist (0-1 overall) avoided the shutout with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win at No. 1 singles by Chris Fletcher, who is ranked No. 14 in the nation in NCAA Division III.
