Gaby Sanchez homered and collected three RBI as Carolina claimed its home opener, 7-1, against Montgomery at Five County Stadium.
Sanchez collected a second-inning RBI and whacked an eighth-inning, two-run homer for the Mudcats, who snapped their two-game losing streak. Carolina trails Huntsville (Ala.) by one-half game in the Southern League Northern Division.
Mudcats hurler Chris Volstad (2-0) retired 11 of 12 batters on ground balls, including a fourth-inning double play. He allowed one run on five hits in six innings of work, and earned his second straight decision.
The teams continue their five-game series today.
